The strength of the sun’s brilliance is responsible for its honor. Because if left for its size, we know it’s relatively insignificant in the face of its coequals. Not to mention its distance from the earth, the sun would have died, or better still never existed in the sight of the Earth’s inhabitants but for its strong rays which fear no evil, know no evil and speak no evil. All they know is to march on and on with the strength within, crossing one layer to another, through one obstacle and another, till they cover that distance of 147.16 million kilometers from their source to the face of the Earth. As if they don’t understand what it means to get tired, they land on earth with so much energy that all life forms on earth depend on them for food and energy. On top of all these, they offer our brethren in the tropics a tough time by scorching with intense heat that you can barely walk under the midday sun without craving for a drop of ice chilled water to cool your temperature. Friends, if the sun’s brilliance is something to talk about, what then can we say about the brilliance of the light of the world—Christ Jesus our Lord?
The strength of Christ’s light is unmatched anywhere in the universe and beyond. And it still remains unparalleled against all the lights in the world put together. No wonder Bible records that “his face shone brighter than the sun in all its brilliance”. In fact, the sun and all other celestial bodies put together will become darkness when they come face-to-face with the brightness of Christ’s light. That’s how intense the light of the world is! Haven’t you read that even before the sun and moon and other celestial bodies were created on the 4th day there was still day and night? Have you stopped to ponder over this vis-a-vis the text which says “there’d be no night there—no need for lamps or sun, for the Lord God will shine on them”? Friends, there is a light which shines brighter than the noonday sun, everlasting and ultimately more penetrating than the any source of light. The light of Christ is influential, and can walk through every fiber of society with ease, confronting every darkness it meets.
But, there’s a problem! Unlike the sun that flaunts its muscles without seeking permission from anyone—rising in the morning and setting at dusk—this greater light of Christ has been confined in the abyss of the believer’s will. Bible puts it this way, “treasures in jars of clay”. The all-brilliant, Omni penetrating and everlasting light of Christ has been set as a lamp in the heart of every single born again Christian who professes Jesus Christ as Lord and personal Savior. Hence, until the alabaster box holding this sweet and expensive fragrance is crushed at the feet of Jesus, not a single person will delight of its flavour and sooth. Isn’t it interesting to know that something as powerful and influential as this can be rendered so calm and powerless simply because the Christian hasn’t decided to release the lion from its den? Friends, Christ’s light which confounds darkness and renders it powerless has been placed in every single one of us, therefore hear the words of Jesus when he said, “let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify the Father who is in heaven”. If God will be glorified in the world around us, then the light of Christ in us must be made to shine without fail. This light is the exemplary life of Jesus that is being lived out by the Christian in every place, at every time and in everything. It is the state where the life of Christ Jesus becomes the definition of yours, so that when onlookers behold your countenance, just one similitude in deed, speech, love and faith can be identified—the man Jesus Christ!
Christians, let’s not live to please the jar, for it contains a treasure more precious than itself. Here, I mean to say that your body, your will, your emotions, your mind and every other part of you contains the light of the world, that light which is far greater than the sun and much more treasured than your very self. It is just like the fragrant perfume in the alabaster box. Hence, the question I want to throw at you is this: the world wants to smell the perfume within your jar, will you crush this jar of self and offer them the life-changing opportunity for the life of Christ to fill their heart? The answer to this hearty question is the thin line that separates Christians from religious zealots!
_”Let YOUR light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven”_ ~ Jesus Christ, the Saviour
_”I have been crucified with Christ. It’s no longer I that lives, but Christ lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me”_ ~ Paul, the Apostle
Church, let’s live to project Jesus Christ, for he is the world’s only hope of light and life. Christ is the only answer to the world, yesterday, today and forever! Peace!
